How to find customers on Reddit

Updated October 2026

Your first customers are probably already on Reddit, asking for something like your product in plain words. The work is finding those posts before someone else answers them, and replying in a way the community accepts. This is the method, from an empty account to a first sale.

Step 1: Write down how your buyer describes the problem

Buyers do not search for your product name. They describe their pain. List ten ways someone might say it: “outgrowing spreadsheets”, “invoices take all weekend”, “our CRM is too expensive”. Add the names of two or three products you replace, because people complain about those by name. This list drives everything that follows.

Step 2: Find the subreddits where buyers ask, not where founders hang out

r/startups and r/SaaS are full of founders. That helps if you sell to founders. If you sell to dentists, landlords or small agencies, your buyers are in their own communities. To find them:

Step 3: Search for the three kinds of buying post

Most posts that mention your keyword are noise. Three kinds are worth your time:

  1. Asking for a tool: “Can anyone recommend an invoicing app for freelancers?”
  2. Fed up with a competitor: “Their renewal just doubled. What are people switching to?”
  3. Choosing between options: “Tool A or Tool B for a five-person team?”

In Reddit search, combine intent words with your category: "looking for" OR "recommend" invoicing, or title:"alternative to" [competitor]. Sort by new. The full list of search tricks is in the Reddit lead generation guide.

Step 4: Reply in the first few hours

A recommendation thread gets most of its views on the first day. Early helpful replies collect the upvotes that keep them at the top, and the poster reads them before they decide. A great reply three days late is mostly wasted.

Step 5: Write a reply worth reading

Step 6: Move the conversation forward

When someone replies with interest, answer in the thread first. Offer to help them get set up, or ask what would stop them from trying it. Only move to DMs if they ask. A public, helpful thread also works as proof for every later reader who finds it on Google.

Step 7: Keep your account healthy

Reddit removes accounts that look like they exist only to promote. Keep most of your activity unrelated to your product, never paste the same reply twice, and do not post across many subreddits within minutes. The details are in Reddit marketing without getting banned.

How much time this takes

Done by hand, steps 2 to 4 take about an hour a day: checking ten subreddits, running a dozen searches and skipping the noise. That is the part a Reddit lead generation tool can take over. GetLeadIntent reads your website, finds the subreddits and searches, and scores each post from 0 to 100 for how likely the author is to buy. You get a short list of real buyers, each with a drafted reply that fits the subreddit’s rules. You send it yourself.

Questions

Can you really find customers on Reddit?

Yes. People post the exact problem your product solves, often with their budget and what they already tried. Answering those posts well is one of the cheapest ways to get first customers.

How long does it take to get a customer from Reddit?

Expect a few weeks. The first replies build history for your account. Most founders who reply daily to the right posts see their first conversations within two to four weeks.

Should I post about my product or reply to others?

Reply first. Replies to people who are already asking convert far better than launch posts, and they carry much less risk of removal.

Do I need a lot of karma?

You need some. Many subreddits hide or remove comments from new accounts with little karma. Spend the first weeks answering questions with no link to build a normal history.
